June Safety Snippet

Dear team members,

As we approach the warmer months, it’s crucial to stay safe and protect ourselves from the heat. Here are some important reminders to keep in mind:

1. Stay Hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar, as they can dehydrate you.
  • Keep a water bottle with you at all times and refill it regularly.

2. Take Breaks in the Shade

  • Schedule regular breaks in a cool, shaded area to prevent overheating.
  • Use these breaks to rest, hydrate, and cool down.

3. Dress Appropriately

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to reflect heat.
  • Use a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes from the sun.
  • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin and reapply every two hours.

4. Recognize the Signs of Heat Illness

  • Heat Cramps: Muscle pains or spasms.
  • Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, cold or pale skin, nausea, headache, dizziness.
  • Heat Stroke: High body temperature (above 103°F), hot and dry skin, rapid pulse, confusion, unconsciousness.

5. Take Immediate Action if You Feel Unwell

  • Move to a cooler place and rest.
  • Drink water or a sports drink.
  • Use cool compresses or take a cool shower if possible.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.

6. Work Smart

  • Try to perform more strenuous tasks during the cooler parts of the day.
  • Use mechanical aids whenever possible to reduce physical exertion.

7. Check on Each Other

  • Keep an eye on your coworkers and encourage each other to take breaks and stay hydrated.
  • Report any signs of heat illness immediately to your supervisor.
